Alice Wilkie

Alice Wilkie appeared in the Ziegfeld Folles and in George White's Scandals.

She was born Alice M. Wilkie on December 24, 1902 in Riverton, Illinois. Her father, Thomas Wilkie, was a grocery store owner from England. Alice moved to New York City and joined George White's Scandals in 1923. She spent several seasons with the show where she became a very popular dancer. The beautiful brunette appeared in The Ziegfeld Folles in 1925. Alice also posed for artists like James Montgomery Flagg and Alfred Cheney Johnston. She wanted to produce her own musicals and created a corporation called Alice Wilke Inc. In an interview she said "I hope to work my way up to stardom. I realize it is going to be quite a hard task but I am determined to reach the top."

After briefly performing with the Ringling Brothers circus in 1927 she retired from show business. Then she married Robert Turner Browning, a pharmaceutical executive, and moved to Short Hills, New Jersey. The couple, who never had had children, enjoyed entertaining friends and going to the the theater. They remained happily married until Robert passed away in 1969. Alice later entered a New Jersey nursing home where she spent her final years. On August 30, 1987 she died at the age of eighty-four. She is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, Virginia.
